City Mayor The Honorable Samuel D. Keller

According to Mayor Samuel Keller, there are 3 major problems that are plaguing the city of Cheviot. The first is the real estate market. Absentee landlords as well as rental property owners as well as aging housing stock has pulled property values down in the last 10 years. Property values are 25% lower than the American average. And finally, a new problem that has emerged in recent years is drug trafficking and thefts associated with drug addiction.

Steps Being Taken by the City’s Government to Improve Conditions

To address the housing issue, a Community Reinvestment Area (CRA) has been set up by the city’s government. The focus of the CRA is to encourage home owners or renters to invest in their homes so that property values increase. Thanks to these measures, property prices have grown by 16% in the last one year, and is expected to grow by another 7.7% by 2020.

The city’s government had been working on creating new sources of revenue for Cheviot so that the dependence on government funding would be reduced. The creation of the Joint Economic Development Districts (JEDD) across the city to encourage economic growth has helped attract more business to the city.

To address the issue of crime in the city, Cheviot teamed up with the Hamilton Country Sheriff’s Office. A full-time police officer from Cheviot also has become a part of the Regional Enforcement Narcotics Unit.

Real feedback from the city’s Facebook page shows that while residents of Cheviot are generally happy with city services, they do have issues about how the police force

handles crime and the lack of economic growth in the city.
